Kevin Conolly MP, Member for Riverstone welcomes a $10 million investment from the NSW Government to help school leavers start their career through free pre-traineeship and pre-apprenticeship courses.
"The NSW Government is committed to helping young people get the training to start their careers," Mr Conolly said.
"Young people in Western Sydney will benefit from a $10 million program to give school leavers access to a fee-free pre-traineeship and pre-apprenticeship course.
"Students who complete these courses are more likely to go on to complete a traineeship or apprenticeship.
"This investment will support up to 2,000 young people into training that works, and eventually into skilled jobs, offering a great opportunity for many young people in Western Sydney."
"As the school year draws to a close, many students will be thinking about their next move and we want more students to consider a career in the trades, so this is a 'try before you buy' initiative," Minister for Skills John Barilaro said.
Students will pay no more than $1,000 for government-supported traineeships from 2016 under new reforms to vocational education and training in NSW.
"We need a steady stream of trainees in a wide range of fields this measure will encourage more people to take up traineeships," said Mr Conolly.
"This change means more people can access high quality, affordable training to gain the skills for the jobs of the future."
Over 85 per cent of the current traineeship qualifications on the NSW Skills List will be cheaper for students in 2016, with the average saving being $1,128. The adjustment is in response to ongoing consultation with training providers, industry and students.
