Member for Riverstone, Mr Kevin Conolly MP today welcomed the NSW Government's announcement to invest $5.1 million over four years across Greater Western Sydney to help pregnant addicts get off drugs and $3.7 million for assertive community management for people with severe substance dependence.
The announcement, made by the Assistant Minister for Health Pru Goward, will result in at least an additional 300 addicted pregnant women across Greater Western Sydney receiving specialist drug and alcohol treatment services throughout their pregnancy and post pregnancy.
Mr Conolly said the funding would provide pregnant mums with addiction a chance to turn their lives around.
"These services will them help them get their lives back on track, provide their children with the best chance of a bright future and break the intergenerational cycle of disadvantage," said Mr Conolly.
Assistant Minister for Health Pru Goward, said that the investment would assist in ensuring that more children have a safe and stable home.
"The government is giving these women an opportunity to change their drug habits and ensure they are caring for their children so they don't have to be removed into care," Ms Goward said.
Ms Goward said that the Government has also committed $3.7 million across Greater Western Sydney to provide assertive community management for people with severe substance dependence.
"Our investment will focus on providing long term intensive, individualised care to people with severe substance dependency to get them on the path to recovery and reduce the number of presentations at emergency departments," Ms Goward said.
The funding is part of the NSW's Government's $75 million Drug Package to fight the scourge of drugs.
