Minister for Women Tanya Davies joined Member for Riverstone, Kevin Conolly MP to announce that Nicole Winram of Stanhope Gardens is the Riverstone electorate Local Woman of the Year for 2017.

"The Local Woman of the Year awards are something I look forward to each year because they highlight the inspirational journeys of a number of outstanding women in our communities," Kevin Conolly said.

Minister Davies said the awards support the NSW Government's commitment to building an equitable, inclusive and safe society.

"The Awards are designed to recognise inspiring female role models and to profile women who have demonstrated excellence in their career and women who make significant contributions to their community," Minister Davies said.

"I congratulate Nicole on her outstanding achievement and thank her for her exceptional example," said Minister Davies.

Nicole Winram is an inspiring volunteer in her local community. Nicole has been volunteering for Cancer Council NSW in the Greater Western Sydney region for the last two years, after she lost her husband to cancer.

Described by her team as a 'great ambassador' for Cancer Council NSW, Nicole is not only an advocate for greater palliative care services for cancer patients and an MP Liaison volunteer, but is also involved in her local Relay For Life, Australia's Biggest Morning Tea and Daffodil Day fundraising projects for Cancer Council NSW in the electorate of Riverstone.

As a Cancer Council community advocate and Saving Life 2015 campaigner Nicole was instrumental in raising the awareness of the financial burden that co-payment fees were placing on the families of those receiving infused chemotherapy treatment. Her advocacy efforts contributed strongly to the NSW Government committing to invest $76 million to abolish the co-payments system, and the Premier made special mention of Nicole's advocacy efforts in the campaign. Consequently, tens of thousands of people in NSW no longer need to pay the co-payment for their treatment during a difficult period in their lives.

In February 2016 Cancer Council NSW assigned her to be their MP Liaison Officer to me as the Member for Riverstone and in April 2016 Nicole Winram was recognised by Cancer Council NSW as their Star Volunteer.

"I'm so honoured to receive this award, truly!" said Nicole Winram on being presented the award by Minister Davies and Kevin Conolly.

"I am very proud to have had the opportunity to nominate Nicole Winram as the Riverstone electorate 2017 Local Woman of the Year and it is truly a privilege to be able to acknowledge the great work she has done and is continuing to do in our community" said Kevin Conolly.

Nicole Winram and other local Woman of the Year award winners will be invited to join the Minister for Women, Tanya Davies at the 2017 NSW Women of the Year award ceremony to be held at the International Convention Centre, Sydney on the morning of Wednesday, 8 March 2017.
