Up to 200 families in Sydney's north-west who are often isolated during floods now have access to a safer, flood free link for the first time after the opening of new eastbound lanes and a bridge as part of the Schofields Road upgrade.

Member for Riverstone Kevin Conolly MP said the NSW Government is providing $340 million to improve Schofields Road between Windsor Road and Richmond Road.

"As part of the upgrade, Roads and Maritime Services raised sections of South Street and built the new Bells Creek Bridge to provide one in 100 year flood immunity for residents and road users," Mr Conolly said.

The new lanes and the new Bells Creek Bridge between Richmond Road and Carnarvon Road means local residents won't see South Street close during more frequent, smaller rain events which often closed their road in the past, either trapping them at home or leaving them unable to access their properties.

In June last year a flood hit the area closing down part of nearby South Street, which would now be avoided.

"This upgrade will mean the community can now sleep a lot easier during heavy rains," Mr Conolly said.

Traffic has moved onto the new eastbound lanes this week, so work can start to build the new westbound lanes.

Stage three of the upgrade will see Schofields Road extended under the existing Richmond railway line across Eastern Creek to Carnarvon Road and widening South Street to Richmond Road.

"When the project is completed, which is expected in mid-2018, the upgrade will provide a flood free, high quality link between the Rouse Hill Town Centre and future Marsden Park town centre and help to better meet the future transport needs of the North West Priority Growth Area," said Mr Conolly.
