Member for Riverstone Kevin Conolly today opened an additional 150-bed minimum security expansion at Parklea Correctional Centre.

The expansion includes three 50-bed accommodation buildings, visits building, support services building, shade structures, exercise fields and landscaping.

The minimum-security centre is part of the NSW Government's $3.8 billion infrastructure program to improve prison capacity.

Mr Conolly said the investment was a vital step towards meeting the Government's commitment to reduce the rate of adult reoffending.

"This is a Government putting rehabilitation first. We want to give inmates every opportunity to walk out of our gates and pay back their debt to society," Mr Conolly said.

"The opening comes at a time when we have more than 13,000 inmates in correctional centres across the state. This expansion will help alleviate pressure and improve operational efficiency."

Minister for Corrections David Elliott said the upgrade was a state of the art facility for inmates and staff.

"The expansion of Parklea Correction Centre is another example of a commitment to delivering modern infrastructure to assist in the rehabilitation of inmates," he said. "The Government is also investing $237 million in rehabilitation programs to compliment these extra beds."

Corrective Services NSW Commissioner Peter Severin said the expansion was about delivering a more efficient and rehabilitation-focused system.

"These 150 new beds will support our Better Prisons program to lift standards and help meet the NSW Government's target to reduce reoffending."

Inmates will arrive at the centre shortly.
