SCHOOL ENROLMENTS FOR 2020 REACHING RECORD LEVELS
Written on the 24 January 2020 by Kevin Conolly
Member for Riverstone Kevin Conolly MP and NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Education today acknowledged that schools across NSW will open their doors next week to one of the largest cohorts of students ever, with a once-in-a-generation spike in school enrolments this year.
Approximately, 497,000 primary school students and 318,000 high school students are enrolled so far for 2020 in the public school system, with 71,000 alone starting kindergarten.
This coincides with the NSW Liberal Government rolling out the largest ever investment in public education in the history of NSW, with $6.7 billion investment in school infrastructure over four years to deliver 190 new and upgraded schools, $1.3 billion on school maintenance over five years and $500 million for installing school air conditioning, including at several schools in the Riverstone electorate.
Locally, Quakers Hill East Public School upgrade was completed late last year, Riverbank Public School upgrade opens to students next week, Schofields Public School and Riverstone High School upgrades are well underway and construction of a new school at Farmland Drive, Schofields is on track.
"We are delivering state-of-the-art facilities to ensure our students of today and tomorrow are provided with the best learning experiences available and we will continue to do so to satisfy increasing demand locally," said Mr Conolly.
Planning continues for new school projects to follow.
"In 2020, we're also going to see at least 839 new teachers and 49 new principals, so the work we're doing is about giving them the best environments to teach in as well," said Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell.
